The History of Keno: From Number Game to Online Casino

Few casino games combine the characteristics of a lottery and a casino game as naturally as Keno.

Few casino games combine the characteristics of a lottery and a casino game as naturally as Keno.

Today, a player can open a Keno game on a smartphone, select numbers and discover the result within seconds. The simplicity of that experience hides a much longer evolution of number-draw games.

The traditional origins associated with Keno

Keno's history is generally traced back to number-based lottery games played in China.

Historical accounts frequently connect its ancestry with the Chinese lottery tradition and a game using Chinese characters rather than the familiar numbered grids seen today.

Over time, the concept evolved considerably. The modern casino game should therefore not be viewed as an unchanged ancient game, but rather as a descendant of earlier lottery-style number games.

Keno arrives in the casino

Keno eventually became established in American gambling venues.

The casino format developed the characteristics now associated with classic Keno: a large numbered field, player-selected spots, a random selection of winning numbers and a payout table based on the number of matches.

One widely recognised configuration uses 80 numbers and draws 20 numbers during each game.

From communal draws to electronic games

Traditional Keno could be organised around central draws in which many tickets participated simultaneously.

Electronic gaming changed this structure.

Video Keno allowed the experience to become individual and much faster. A player no longer necessarily had to wait for the next scheduled casino draw. The machine could generate a new game when requested.

This development created an obvious bridge to online Keno.

The arrival of online Keno

Keno adapted naturally to internet gambling.

The game requires relatively few interface elements:

  • a numbered grid;
  • number-selection controls;
  • stake controls;
  • a draw;
  • a paytable.

This made it straightforward to reproduce on desktop computers and, later, smartphones.

Digital technology also allowed developers to experiment with the format.

A new generation of Keno games

Modern online Keno can differ significantly from the traditional casino version.

Developers can change the grid size, number of selections, quantity of drawn numbers, payout structure and visual presentation.

Additional features can include multipliers, jackpots, adjustable risk settings and multiple simultaneous tickets.

The result is that Keno has gradually changed from one recognisable casino format into a broader category of number-draw games.

What has not changed?

Despite all these developments, the central experience remains remarkably familiar.

The player makes a selection before the draw. Random numbers are generated. Matches determine the result.

There is no card-playing decision to make and no wheel to predict. Keno reduces the gambling experience to one of its simplest forms: selecting numbers and waiting to see whether they match.

That simplicity explains why a game rooted in traditional number draws could adapt so easily to modern online gambling.
