Keno has a particularly recognisable identity in France thanks to the national lottery game operated by FDJ.
For players researching Keno online, however, it is important to distinguish the official French lottery product from the numerous casino-style Keno games that can be encountered internationally.
They share a common numbers-and-draw principle but are not necessarily the same game.
The French Keno game
The current French Keno format asks players to select between 4 and 10 numbers from a grid containing 56 numbers.
Sixteen winning numbers are drawn.
The amount won depends on the quantity of numbers selected, the number of matches, the stake and any applicable options.
Players can participate through authorised FDJ channels, including online.
Keno online in France
French gambling regulation makes the distinction between different types of online gambling particularly important.
The fact that an overseas casino website offers a game described as "Keno" does not mean that the operator is authorised to provide online casino gambling to players in France.
Players looking specifically for information about the authorised French game can consult this guide to playing Keno legally in France, alongside the current official game rules.
The legal status of an operator and the rules of a particular Keno game are two separate questions and should both be checked before playing.
Lottery Keno versus casino Keno
The French lottery version should not be confused with the common 80-number casino format described elsewhere on this website.
Classic casino Keno often uses:
- 80 numbers on the grid;
- 20 numbers in the draw;
- rapid consecutive rounds;
- game-specific payout tables.
The current French Keno game instead uses its own rules, draw schedule and payout structure.
Consequently, strategies, probabilities or payout information relating to an 80-number casino Keno game should not automatically be applied to French Keno.
Playing Keno online
One advantage of an online lottery account is that selections and results can be managed digitally.
Depending on the features currently offered by the operator, players can choose their numbers, use an automatic selection function, determine their stake and participate without completing a physical ticket.
The fundamental random nature of the draw remains unchanged.
Check current rules
Lottery products evolve.
Grid sizes, available stakes, optional features, draw schedules and maximum prizes can change over time. Information about Keno should therefore always be checked against the current official rules before placing a wager.
This is especially important when reading older Keno guides, which may accurately describe a previous version of the game but no longer correspond to the product currently available.
Gambling responsibly
Legal availability does not remove the financial risks associated with gambling.
Keno should be treated as paid entertainment rather than as a way of generating income. Setting spending limits before playing and avoiding attempts to recover previous losses are basic precautions regardless of the size of the wager.
In France, gambling is restricted to adults aged 18 and over.
